BlackCatTips is Kyle Brooks, a street folk artist native to the American South. In addition to his studio and mural work, Brooks creates street poems and whimsical roadside art installations. With his brush, bright colors and a few found materials, he paints the world happy.

Joe Dreher, aka JOEKINGATL, considers himself a social artist. His work is always multi-dimensional because he sees a world where people are not obstacles, heroes, rogues or saints. They are not flat, but dimensional and deep.

This August's Art Over Dinner event will celebrate street art as a form of expression and communication.

We will ask ourselves questions such as "What makes you weird, and why does that make you great?" and "Why is public art important for Atlanta?" and more.

Art Over Dinner is a series of intimate gatherings with artists and the organizations that support their work. We collaborate with the chefs at HomespunATL and local farmers to bring a seasonal meal that showcases winemakers and brewers, and invite our guest artists to spark the conversation at one long farm table on the outdoor deck of The Art Farm at Serenbe. Art Over Dinner is sponsored by Lexus.

Art Farm at Serenbe is a vibrant artist complex that provides a place for engagement and inspiration. It serves as Serenbe's central place for artists, the arts and culture. This complex is deeply rooted in process, education and creating multiple platforms for creativity. Artists, practitioners and researchers come here to deepen their practice and broaden their creative connections.

  • The Art Farm at Serenbe

Khalilah Birdsong is a painter with a studio practice based in Atlanta, Georgia. The scale and evidence of physicality of her paintings echoes Alfred Leslie, Joan Mitchell, Jean Riopelle and the late abstract paintings of Gerhard Richter. Birdsong differs from many of these early abstract painters in that while they artists were tied to references to nature and a looser, freer gesture, she combines physicality with a precision and a finely-calibrated balance in her work. This speaks to her own personal gestalt, rather than any movement or school of painting defined by social milieu or a specific time.
During dinner, Khalilah will discuss her journey of becoming a painter at 33 without ever previously picking up a brush. From an entertainment executive to painter, she tapped into a creative gift that was buried inside her to create a new profession.

  • Art Farm at Serenbe

Lexus and Serenbe present Art Over Dinner, a series of intimate gatherings with artists, personalities and the organizations that support their work.

On October 16th we welcome Wiley Miller, Non Sequitur

Wiley Miller has always had one simple goal: "Produce the funniest, best-drawn cartoon possible, regardless of theme, subject matter or setting." Non Sequitur has accomplished that and more: A hit with fans of all ages, the strip is distributed to more than 800 newspapers.

Wiley is the recipient of the Rueben Award, naming him Outstanding Cartoonist of the Year by the National Cartoonists Society in 2014, the most prestigious prize in cartooning. In addition to that, Non Sequitur has won four National Cartoonists Society divisional awards, and Wiley was the first cartoonist to be presented a divisional award after only one year in syndication. He's the only one ever to win in both the comic strip and comic panel categories.

"Innovation" is a constant in Wiley's approach to cartooning, and his ongoing quest to stretch the medium has been integral to Non Sequitur's success. While the strip's sardonic humor and distinctive art have given Non Sequitur an impassioned following among readers, Wiley's technical innovations have earned admiration from newspaper editors and comics connoisseurs. In addition to developing a unique drawing method that allows the cartoon to be used in either a strip or panel format, Wiley also pioneered a cost-effective way to produce the strip using process color, which gives it a depth and richness of color not seen previously on the comics page.

Wiley studied art at Virginia Commonwealth University and worked for several educational film studios in Los Angeles before joining the Greensboro, N.C., News & Record as staff artist/editorial cartoonist in 1976. After a stint at the Santa Rosa Press Democrat in California, he created his first syndicated strip, Fenton, in 1982. He returned to editorial cartooning three years later, joining the staff of the San Francisco Examiner.

In 1988, Wiley was named Best Editorial Cartoonist by the California Newspaper Publishers Association. He won the prestigious Robert F. Kennedy Journalism Award for editorial cartooning in 1991.

A native of California, Wiley and his family now live in Georgia.

AOD: Gregor Turk

  • The Art Farm at Serenbe

Lexus and Serenbe present Art Over Dinner, a series of intimate gatherings with artists, personalities and the organizations that support their work.

On April 17th we welcome Gregor Turk.

Known for his public art installations, ceramic sculpture, photography, and mixed-media constructions, Gregor Turk often incorporates mapping imagery and cultural markings into his artwork. His response to his surroundings, whether in his hometown, Atlanta, or while traveling, serves as a major impetus for much of what he creates.

Projects include producing a significant body of artwork resulting from hiking and biking along the course of the 1,270 mile section of the 49th parallel that defines the U.S./Canadian border, photographing blank billboards along fictitious Interstate 50, and making thousands of rubbings from text and imagery from the ubiquitous historical plaques and markers found in American cities. He has permanent public art installations in the International Concourse at the Atlanta Airport (gates E 33 – 36) and in the Jacksonville Airport.  His work is included in the JPMorgan Chase Art Collection, High Museum of Art, MOCA - GA(Museum of Contemporary Art – Georgia), and numerous other public and private collections.

He received his B.A. from Rhodes College and his M.F.A. from Boston University.  Between degrees he served as a Peace Corps Volunteer in Liberia, West Africa.  His studio is located in Atlanta, Georgia.

Dinner will be provided by Homespun, wine provided by The Farmhouse at Serenbe, and music throughout dinner will be perfomed by John Burke.

Tickets are $85 each and seats are limited to 40 guests for our intimate evening of discussion and dinner. Tickets are nonrefundable.

We will do our best to accommodate dietary restrictions, provided that they are given with advance notice.

Saturday, April 16
10am push-off from Peachtree Bikes' new location, The Crossroads at Serenbe
Finish the ride with a beer to celebrate their Grand Opening
$10/person, limited to 25 guests

The Silk Sheets name refers to how smooth the hills are in Chattahoochee Hills. There are some hills, but for the most part, the miles are a mix of flat and rolling. Combine this with low traffic and well-maintained roads and you can see why cyclists give the area a name like Silk Sheets.

Gregor Turk often incorporates mapping imagery and cultural markings into his artwork. Projects include producing a significant body of artwork resulting from hiking and biking. As an avid cyclist, Turk used bicycle tubes with their valve stems in much of his work including a recent installation on the Atlanta BeltLine.

He has permanent public art installations in the International Concourse at the Atlanta Airport (gates E 33 – 36) and in the Jacksonville Airport. His work is included in the JPMorgan Chase Art Collection, High Museum of Art, MOCA - GA (Museum of Contemporary Art – Georgia), and numerous other public and private collections.

Experience the work Hannah Israel creates during her residency at Serenbe at our next Art Hour, in partnership with AIR Serenbe and Independent Distilling Company.

$15, Includes Open Studio Viewing, Art Farm Tour + Drinks

Hannah Israel is the 2016 recipient of The Line & Chance Focus Fellowship through AIR Serenbe, awarded to an artist using drawing as a dynamic medium for experimentation.

Israel draws beauty out of tangible and intangible materials, as a poetic gesture that reflects the fragility of the world. Without a specific reference point, She investigates line, volume, texture, shape, and form that imbues a sense of intuition and informs a deep intellectual curiosity. Language, spatial relationship, and scale are also central concern in her work.

She is interested in using information as a form of abstraction. The nature of her work maps the relationships of our existence by illustrating how fragile time can be and how predictable our experiences can be based on the temperament of the world around us. Influenced by process art, she creates art that resemble subsets of sorting, gathering, tearing, cutting, and patterning.
